Who Watches the Watchmen

So Far So Good!
I am about 60% through the Watchmen graphic novel from DC. It will soon be a major motion picture and I thought I owed it to myself to read it before I saw it. I can easily see why this made Time Magazine’s Top 100 Novels list. So far it is an amazing piece of work. I was going to say “for a comic” but in general.
The writing is out of this world. I don’t know how Alan Moore keeps it all straight. This book is not for the faint of heart when it comes to panel perusing. The storylines go deep and jump around from character to character and then back again. Some may find it confusing. I had to go back and re-read a couple of pages to make sure I was getting the jist. Oh and BTW, it’s not really a “kids” comic. The prose is definitely for those who can grow facial hair or have the right to vote. I reconsidered the first part of that last sentence as I know many a 12 year old who needs to shave.
So far my favorite characters are Rorshack and The Night Owl II. The other members of the group are all complex and flawed. Each of them having ugly but true human limits. Only one of the Watchmen actually has powers and in a world full of “masks” as they are called in the book - one SuperHero may be one too many.
Stay tuned for the rest of the review when I finish the book.
